Used to kill the desert squirrels when you were young & free
Then one day you grew a beard & came to look for me.
Perched upon your Spanish horse through blackened eyes you see
Hold the reigns tight, with knuckes white, you won’t find me.
Walking in the desert, walking stick’s my only friend.
Easy to believe there’s no beginning & no end
Peer around a rock to see the sands of times extend
Keep my mind tight, & brain upright, don’t let it bend.
Falling on the sands beneath a crushed blueberry sky
Roll upon this ground but let the cowboy ride on by
Don’t go running to those sticky arms just like a spanish fly
Cross my arms tight, & say goodnnight, try not to cry.
Saw you in the town amidst a dusty gust of breeze
Stretched out your adobe hands & got down on your knees.
So uncertain if you should lay down the threats or try to please.
You grab my arm, unfurl your charm, and watch me freeze.
Gingerly, you speak to me of every place you’ve been
Words crawl through your mustache & they let my world extend
With a branch at every corner, and a leaf at every bend.
A golden sound, and eyes so brown, they never end.
Rope upon the ground, I’d never cross it anyway
Mama always said its best to turn & walk away
Just keep walking through those empty streets until the end of day
You can refuse to win or lose when you don’t play.
Daddy in the sky, I don’t know why you let me down.
Paper in the wind, I’m just a thing that blows around
Like a word upon the mustached lips of every man in town
When they can’t retrieve the money they laid down.
Your sticks and stones can’t touch my bones
